In this section, we talk about careers which aren't much sought-after but are worth pursuing. Our focus, this time, is on Art. In the article below, we explore career in the following three fields –​ Cartooning; Painting; and Theatre

CAREER FOCUS: Art

When we talk about ‘Art’, a lot of things come to our mind like painting, theatre, writing, dancing, singing, etc. When we express or apply our creative skill and imagination, usually in a visual form, it becomes art. These works are often appreciated for their beauty or emotional power.

Although children are encouraged to take it up as a hobby, art as a career option is seldom encouraged. That’s because money is usually a constraint in the initial days of career. But the profession can be extremely rewarding as it will satisfy your creative hunger. Plus, money is no constraint once you establish your name.

It is not possible to discuss all art forms in one article. Hence, we would focus on the following three:

  • Painting
  • Cartooning
  • Theatre

PAINTING

This is the most accepted art form known to mankind. The most popular types of paint include oil, acrylic, watercolour and tempera.

Skills Required:

Creative mind

Qualifications:

Although it is not compulsory to have a formal degree, it helps if you have one. BA in Creative Art or post graduate diploma in Art.

Job Prospects:

  • Teacher in school or any Art college
  • Work as a freelancer

CARTOONING

Who doesn’t love cartoons? But making a career in this field is quite challenging. Besides newspapers and comic books, one can also explore a career in the animation industry.

Skills Required:

  • Sense of humour
  • Sketching
  • Good story telling
  • Good observation skills

Qualifications:

Although it is not compulsory to have a formal degree, it helps if you have one. BA in Creative Art or post graduate diploma in Art.

  • Illustrators in newspapers/ television

THEATRE

It involves enacting in front of an audience; includes musicals, ballets, operas, plays, etc.

Skills Required:

  • Confidence
  • Good oratory skills
  • Good diction
  • Sensitivity so that you can understand and feel the character you are playing​

Qualifications:

10+2 in any stream though not compulsory

  • FTII, Pune
  • Sangeet Natak Academy
  • Kerala Kalamandalam

Job Prospects:

  • Act on stage shows/television/cinema
  • Can also work behind the screen as directors, writers, etc.
