“I had almost given up on myself after failing in two subjects. But my mentor never gave up on me. I started trying again because someone believed I could.”
While this is the story of a class VIII student from a Kendriya Vidyalaya in the Guwahati region, she is not alone. More than 2,000 students across Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) in the region have rediscovered hope and confidence through a transformative mentorship initiative called ‘Each One–Reach One.’
A Thoughtful Step Towards Student Well-being
The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) has long been committed to improving the quality of education across its 25 administrative regions in India. In line with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, KVS schools are encouraged to implement innovative and inclusive practices that go beyond academics, ensuring students feel motivated, engaged, and supported.
Guwahati Region’s Each One – Reach One is a powerful example of such innovation. Unlike a large-scale, one-size-fits-all programme, this initiative focuses on individualised mentorship — providing personal support to students who are academically struggling, emotionally distressed, or showing signs of behavioural challenges.
Each One – Reach One: Focused Mentorship for Lasting Impact
In the academic year 2024–25, out of 41,541 students enrolled in KVS schools in the Guwahati Region, 2,026 students — around 5% — were identified for one-on-one mentorship. These students came from all levels, from Balvatika to Class XII, and were carefully selected based on signs of academic decline, emotional insecurity, or behavioural issues.
Each student was paired with a teacher or principal who took on the role of a dedicated mentor. These mentors provided continuous, compassionate support through regular phone calls, classroom interactions, motivational sessions, and even home visits.
The aim was simple yet profound: To ensure every struggling student feels seen, heard, and supported.

From Struggles to Confidence
Common challenges faced by the mentored students included exam anxiety, low self-esteem, peer pressure, emotional isolation, and academic gaps. Through this initiative, they received:
- Help in bridging learning gaps
- Support in building communication skills and conceptual clarity
- Encouragement to set small, achievable goals
- Emotional reassurance and positive reinforcement
Among students in Classes IX to XII, the initiative recorded a remarkable 99.9% success rate, demonstrated through academic improvement, better behaviour, and increased participation in class.
A Model for the Nation
The initiative, born in the KVS Guwahati Region, has begun inspiring other regions to adopt similar mentorship practices. Its success has shown that personalised, compassionate support can have a significant impact on students who might otherwise fall behind.
A teacher involved in the programme summed up the impact beautifully: “This programme has taught me that behind every struggling child is a story — and sometimes, a simple conversation can be the start of a breakthrough.”

Training the Mentors
To support the mentors themselves, KVS Guwahati launched a parallel programme called “Mentors of Mentors.” It trains teachers to guide students using SMART goals — Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound — while focusing on empathy and regular progress tracking.

At its heart, Each One – Reach One is a reminder that education is not just about grades —it’s about relationships. By ensuring that no struggling student is left behind, this initiative is not only changing academic outcomes, but also redefining what it means to teach, lead, and care in today’s classrooms.
