Hundreds of students from various schools across Jammu & Kashmir recently participated in the Mata Lalleshwari painting competition, organised to commemorate the 704th birth anniversary of Yogini Lalleshwari, also known as Lal Ded (Mother Lalla). Students from schools such as Bhagwati Haqiqat Memorial Public High School, Abhay Higher Secondary School, Playway House Hr Sec School and Heemaa Public School enthusiastically took part, showcasing their artistic talent while celebrating the life and teachings of the 14th-century mystic poet.
This competition is part of a week-long series of global events initiated by the Kashmiri Pandit community to raise awareness about Lal Ded’s spiritual wisdom and cultural legacy. A revered symbol of wisdom, spiritual liberation and poetic brilliance, Lal Ded’s profound vaakh (spiritual verses) continue to influence Kashmir’s cultural and spiritual landscape.
Today marks the birth anniversary of Yogini Lal Ded, and Kashmiri Pandits around the world are celebrating with enthusiasm. The festivities include discourses by historians and experts, with special prayers and hawan ceremonies being held in her honour. Recitations of her vaakh (spiritual verses), along with discussions and talk shows, are taking place to deepen the understanding of her teachings. Documentaries and cultural programmes are being organised to encourage participation from both younger and older generations. These events, both online and offline, are being conducted in Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi, Haryana, Mumbai, the US, and many other locations globally.
The celebrations will continue until 15 September.
