In a significant step towards transforming school education, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has launched a fresh set of textbooks tailored to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. These newly introduced resources promise to nurture curiosity, creativity, and deeper conceptual understanding among students.
A Leap Towards Experiential and Holistic Learning
The textbooks, designed for Classes 5 and 8, mark a major shift from rote learning to experiential and inquiry-based pedagogy. Each book reflects the ethos of NEP 2020 — promoting critical thinking, multi-disciplinary learning, and vocational exposure.
Highlights of the New Launch:
For Class 8:
- Curiosity (Science): Encourages scientific thinking through real-life examples, activities, and a questioning approach to natural phenomena.
- Kaushal Bodh (Vocational Education): Introduces students to hands-on vocational skills, bridging the gap between knowledge and employability.
- Poorvi (English): Integrates literature with language skills through relatable themes and engaging stories.
- Kriti (Art): Blends traditional and contemporary art practices, encouraging self-expression and cultural appreciation.
- Malhar (Hindi): Uses stories and poems to enhance linguistic sensitivity and socio-emotional learning.
For Class 5:
- Veena (Hindi): Engages learners with child-friendly narratives and illustrations, making language learning enjoyable and contextual.
- Santoor (English): Aims to build foundational skills in reading, comprehension, and communication through imaginative content.
Aligning with the Vision of NEP
These textbooks are more than just learning materials — they are designed to act as tools of transformation in the classroom. Rooted in the NCF-SE 2023, the content emphasizes joyful learning, integration of arts and values, and local-global relevance.
This launch is said to be part of NCERT’s phased rollout of curriculum reforms across all grades, which will gradually be implemented in the coming academic years.
What This Means for Educators and Students
Teachers may now explore new pedagogical strategies, including project-based learning, story-telling, and interdisciplinary connections. Students, in turn, are likely to benefit from a richer, more engaging learning experience that prepares them for the challenges of the 21st century.
As India embarks on this new educational journey, these textbooks are set to be a cornerstone in reshaping the way knowledge is imparted — with curiosity, creativity, and clarity at its core.
