Regional Resistance Movements to Be Covered in Vol 2 of Grade 8 Textbook: NCERT

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has issued a clarification regarding recent media reports concerning the Grade 8 Social Science textbook titled “Exploring Society: India and Beyond.”

Some news articles had raised concerns about the omission of references to regional resistance movements in the newly released textbook. In response, NCERT has clarified that the current textbook is Volume 1 of a two-part series. As such, not all historical topics have been included in the first volume.

NCERT further informed that Volume 2 of the textbook is currently in its final stages of development and is scheduled for release by September–October 2025. This forthcoming volume will include detailed discussions on various regional resistance movements and armed uprisings. Notable examples such as the Paika Rebellion (Khurda Uprising) of Odisha and the Kuka Movement of the Sikhs in Punjab will be addressed in this volume.

NCERT reassures all stakeholders—students, educators, and parents—that the complete series will offer a comprehensive and balanced view of India’s historical and social developments. The two-volume structure has been designed to provide content in a phased manner while ensuring historical accuracy and pedagogical relevance.
