Design Thinking Workshop: Inspiring Students to Innovate
Students presented creative solutions to societal issues such as water logging, affordable mobility aids, and infrastructure challenges. Guided by design thinking principles and SWOT analysis, they explored innovative ways to make their ideas both impactful and sustainable.
Class 9 students were in for an inspiring experience as a workshop on Design Thinking was conducted at St Teresa School, Indirapuram by Dr Sangita Sharma, an expert in the field. The session aimed to equip pupils with a hands-on understanding of design thinking principles, emphasising creativity, problem-solving, and user-centered innovation.
Dr Sharma guided students through the five stages of design thinking: empathy, define, ideate, prototype and test. Participants engaged in interactive exercises and brainstorming sessions that encouraged them to think outside the box and approach problems with empathy and insight.
Students identified practical, pressing societal issues such as water logging, the challenge of climbing coconut trees, high wheelchair costs, and poor road conditions. Their solutions were equally innovative—some proposed using recyclable, sustainable materials to manufacture affordable wheelchairs, while others suggested installing underground water tanks and purification centers to address water logging.
The session concluded with Dr Sharma advising students to approach design thinking through three essential lenses: Desirability, Feasibility, and Viability — ensuring their ideas are meaningful, practical and affordable. She also emphasised the importance of conducting a SWOT analysis to evaluate strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, guiding students to make well-rounded, strategic decisions in their projects.
