On August 23, 2023, India became the first country to successfully land on the moon’s southern polar region with the Chandrayaan-3 mission. This achievement also made India the fourth country to land on the moon. To honour this landmark accomplishment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that August 23 would henceforth be celebrated as ‘National Space Day.’
This year, India is going to celebrate its maiden National Space Day with the theme, ‘Touching Lives while Touching the Moon: India’s Space Saga’.
ISRO and several other organisations in the space sector are planning to celebrate this day by hosting a variety of events. As per ISRO, “A myriad of events will unfold highlighting India’s remarkable achievements in space, profound benefits to the society, and boundless opportunities for people from all walks of life to engage with the Indian space programme.” The celebrations will also be streamed on ISRO website and its YouTube channel.
SPACE India, which focusses on astronomy and STEM education among schools, will host a virtual panel discussion at 11 am. Renowned experts will delve into the success of Chandrayaan-3 and ISRO’s contributions to space exploration. The discussion will be live-streamed on its YouTube channel.
